This project inspires students to use their creativity. After studying rainforests of the world, each student or group of students will make a lapbook containing information that has been learned. This culminating activity can be shared with parents and other students.

Tips:

Use two sheets of 12 by 18 inch construction paper instead of a purchased file folder to minimize costs.

Instructions:

1.       Give each student a legal-sized colored file folder for their project.

2.    Cut 3 kapok trees and several grass patches from assorted shades of green and brown construction paper or cardstock..

3.       For the cover, cut the trunk off one brown tree, glue to a green tree, and attach to the file folder as shown.  Write the title of the project using markers.

4.       Use the other trees and grass patches to assemble a rainforest section and label the layers as shown on the left inside section of the file folder.

5.       Cut  flip-flap #3 and glue over the trees as shown.  Label each flap with one geographic rainforest area.  Write details about the areas under the flaps.  An alternative would be to print out descriptions, cut them to size and glue under the flaps.

6.       Cut 2 leaf book covers from green construction paper or cardstock.  Cut leaf book pages from copy paper.  Write about the plants of the rainforest assemble the books, staple on the left edge and attach the back cover to the file folder as shown.

7.       Make a magic book containing 8 rainforest facts.  (See magic book assembly directions online at www.accucut.com)

8.        Cut, assemble and glue a folder- slash pocket to the file folder as shown.  Insert the completed magic book.

9.       Cut 4 graduated flash cards from assorted colors of construction paper or cardstock.  Cut animal shapes and glue one to each flash card, then write descriptions of the animals.

10.   Attach the flash cards to the file folder using a brass brad.
