The pieces of a story are connected with threads of meaning, like the ribbon of paper in this spiral mobile. Provide pre-cut thematic die-cut shapes for each student in your class, and ask students to create mobiles illustrating a story the class is reading together.

Other Materials:
  • Paper Punch
  • Glue
  • Construction Paper or Cardstock
  • Yarn and/or Ribbon
  • Pen -- Black
Tips:

To illustrate Charlotte's Web by E.B. White, cut out pigs, spiders and spider webs. To illustrate other stories, cut out other corresponding shapes.

Instructions:

1. Cut enough spirals for each student in class, along with small shapes that illustrate story you are reading. Decorate shapes or allow students to decorate.
2. Write or print labels on rectangles identifying different characters or parts of story.
3. Punch holes in mobile and in tops of shapes and labels.
4. Tie shapes onto mobile through punched holes. In some cases, as with the web, glue shapes or labels to larger shape.
5. Add yarn or ribbon to spiral center as hanger.

To learn: Give students parts of mobile. As you discuss the story with the class, show students how to put the pieces together to illustrate the plot, characters and other story parts. Hang mobiles from ceiling or send home with students. After mobiles are made, ask students to use as prompts to retell the story in their own words.
