Experience ... These have always served me well. However, I was cutting very thick materials with a Pinnovation die and the plastic cutting mat slipped and unknowingly exposed a pin which got caught on one of the shields and broke it. Just please be careful when using your pin dies. I have not replaced my shields yet - it's on my to-do list. :D
